^ Located in Spotsylvania County, VA, The Hunting Run Dam is a water supply dam that creates an off stream storage reservoir.

Hunting Run Dam:
A Grouting Case History

Overview

The Hunting Run Dam grout curtain was quantitatively designed with a defined performance criteria of less than 5 Lugeons.*  The basic grout curtain was a single-line curtain, 1,100 feet long and constructed up to 125 feet deep.  This design also provided for additional curtain lines of variable depth in reaches wherever geologic conditions were found to require additional grouting.  The grout curtain construction value was approximately $1.1 million.

Solution

Grouting was accomplished using the IntelliGroutTM System.  Its ability to display water testing results by hole series, in addition to displaying the Lugeon* values at every stage, permitted instaneous performance assessments as grouting proceeded.  IntelliGrout's analytical and visual display capabilities were of tremendous value in locating and isolating specific geologic features   which required additional verification or treatment.  This allowed highly effective program modifications to target those features in a time frame compatible with the project's rapid construction pace.

* A lugeon is a unit of permeability used in grouting work.  Five Lugeons equals 1.1 x 10-4 feet per minute.
