Gannett  Fleming Completes
Hunting Run Water Supply Project

Project Fact

Overall, 90,000 people were served by this project: 70,000 in Spotsylvania County and 20,000 in the city of Fredericksburg.

Spotsylvania County, VA, and the adjacent city of Fredericksburg, VA, recently completed a seven-year project to upgrade and improve its water systems.  Gannett Fleming provided engineering services for the design, bid, construction, testing and monitoring phases of the project. . .

Funding For The First
LEED™-Registered
Water Treatment Plant

The Northampton Borough Municipal Authority (NBMA) recently received a $2,000 grant from the Sustainable Energy Fund of
Central Eastern Pennsylvania
.
Gannett Fleming secured this funding, which will be used for energy modeling to support its design of NBMA’s new 8 mgd water treatment plant - the first Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)™-registered water treatment facility design in the U.S. . .

Environmental Management Systems and The Solid Waste Industry:
Part 4: ISO 14001 Benefits

Environmental Management System (EMS) solid waste benefits, varied and diverse, legitimize EMS industry application and are further realized from EMS development . . .

Central Penn Business Journal
"Forty Under 40" Winner Dean Foote

Each year, the Central Penn Business Journal selects forty talented business people from Central Pennsylvania under the age of 40 who excel in the workforce.  This year's edition includes Dean - a multi-tasker constantly looking for new challenges. . .

For information on Dean's Cellular SCADA work, click here.

Water Regulations Update:
Let's Get Our Facts Straight!

Not only are the LT2ESWTR and Stage 2 DBPR regulations critically important to the drinking water community, but time is running out to correct an alarming and misleading Stage 2 statistic. . .

Water Quality Improvement Grants

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently awarded over $12 million in water resource quality improvement grants to 22 universities.  Emphasizing watersheds influenced by agricultural activities, these grants are the latest outreach initiative by the USDA-funded Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) Water Quality Improvement Program.

For more USDA grant information, read their related press release. To learn more about the CSREES Program, peruse their web site.

New USEPA Administrator

Former Utah Governor and national environmental management and homeland security advocate, Mike Leavitt, recently became the new USEPA administrator.  Among other pressing initiatives, Leavitt places air quality reform high on his priority list.

Acting USEPA administrator, Marianne Horinko, returned to her former position as the agency’s Assistant Administrator for the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response.

For more on Leavitt, review his USEPA biography. His first speech outlining his agenda can be read in the USEPA newsroom.

Sustainability And
LEED™ Certification

Gannett Fleming incorporates LEED™ standards in its projects to assure that new design meets energy conservation goals. The voluntary LEED™ program emphasizes sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

SSO And CMOM:
Attention Wastewater Collection Systems!

As reported last issue, sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) is a hot wastewater topic receiving national attention. Despite USEPA efforts, there is still controversy over the legitimacy of data which links SSOs to environmental problems, among other municipality concerns.

On the local level, state groups such as the Pennsylvania Water Environment Federation (PWEA) are taking action to guide and advocate SSO regulations and improvements. A PWEA workshop next Spring on “Capacity Management, Operation, and Maintenance (CMOM)” is an important initiative to educate and inform wastewater constituents about this important aspect of SSO legislation and related topics.

Gannett Fleming’s own Joe Strauch and Tom Jones will deliver presentations on “How to Enhance Capacity In Your System” and “Using Excel To Organize The Data” at this event.

Brownfields Initiatives

While recently exhibiting at and endorsing "Brownfields 2003" in Portland, OR, Gannett Fleming presented posters for three Brownfields Pilot projects.

Check back soon for more information!

Environmental Management Systems and The Solid Waste Industry

Environmental Management System (EMS) experts Steve Rowley and Scott Groft recently prepared and presented a paper entitled "Learning From Experience: Getting
ISO 14001 Certified" at SWANA's "WASTECON 2003" event in St. Louis, MO.

Over the past six months, our  EMS Solid Waste Series has covered:
> Background
> Regulatory Approach VS. ISO 14001
> Implementation
> Benefits

The paper ranges from defining, implementing and operating an ISO 14001 EMS, to third-party verification and resulting benefits.
