Environmental Management Systems and The Solid Waste Industry:
Part 1: Background

While more than 1,600 organizations have been ISO 14001-certified in the United States, EMS is on the rise in the solid waste sector. . .

Community Asset Management:
Part 2: Information Management Systems

Previously, we reported on how local governments must face new asset inventorying issues in light of GASB 34 requirements.  In addition to greater financial accountability, both municipalities and utilities are challenged to process all of the information necessary to conduct business and provide quality community service.

There is a practical solution.  Municipal and utility personnel can utilize IMS technology to maximize productivity when performing planning, development and administrative activities.

High-Tech Tools
Cover Multiple Industries

Flexible and diverse, IMS applications span numerous industries and markets.  In addition to environmental and water/wastewater system functions, data management solutions benefit private, commercial, utility, government, transportation and military sectors.

The Intelligent Road/Rail Information Server (IRRIS) application, for example, is the first web-based portal in the world designed to combine highly-detailed, local and relevant information into one intuitive, web-based interface for military and U.S. infrastructure information.

Developed by GeoDecisions® (Gannett Fleming's  software independent GIS/IT consulting division), IRRIS is a valuable tool being used to protect the nation’s infrastructure.

It's Official!
Price Begins Term As AWWA President

Marlay Price, Gannett Fleming Vice President and Water Resources Marketing Director, becomes American Water Works Association President effective June, 2003 . . .

USEPA Programs Well Established
As Administrator Moves On

USEPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman's recent resignation becomes effective June 27th.  As the top USEPA official for more than two years, she received mixed support, often caught in the middle of last-minute White House reversals on key environmental programs.

Whitman reiterated the Bush administration's intent to blend "environmental protection with economic prosperity" in recent interviews.

She also cited aggressive "air, water and land" agendas in her recent resignation letter.

Although a replacement has not yet been named, two prominent candidates for the USEPA's top job include Josephine Cooper and David Struhs.  Cooper, a former aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, is president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.  Struhs is Secretary for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Utility Systems Management

Tune in next issue to find out how information management systems benefit Pennsylvania communities.

Water/Wastewater
Wireless Technologies

Utilizing wireless service providers when implementing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems is an affordable and practical information technology.

Check back next issue as Gannett Fleming Control Systems Engineer Evan Curtis, PE, updates us on next-generation wireless SCADA technologies.

Solid Waste and
Environmental Management Systems

ISO 14001 environmental management systems are increasingly popular in the solid waste industry.  EMS-controlled activities range from landfills and recovery and maintenance facilities to transfer stations and hazardous waste management.

A presentation defining the EMS solid waste role was recently delivered to the New York State Association for Solid Waste Management.  For information on this event or our related article, contact Gannett Fleming Solid Waste Specialist Chris Campman, PE
