Like it or not, we all must be concerned about security on several levels: personal security, security of our utility or business, security of our community and national security.  It’s become a seemingly never-ending and limitless concern.  If you're worried- you're not alone.

Also included:
^ landscaping
^ brownfields

If you perform a Google search for "security" on the internet, you’ll find 59,600,000 sites; "national security" yields 4,050,000 sites; and "security advisers" 304,000 sites.

In this issue, we’ll provide you with some more vulnerability assessment needs and solutions for buildings and infrastructure (focusing on physical and contamination threats to water systems  - see also Issue 6).

Sustaining Lawns and Gardens:

A well-maintained lawn or garden can increase property value and provide a clean, safe environment to relax in and enjoy. But many of us are applying too many chemicals and fertilizers to our lawns and gardens which pollute waterways, destroy foliage and waste money.

Low impact lawn and garden care promotes a healthier, greener environment - just follow these simple steps:

Click here for more native landscaping.
  • Mow high

  • Mulch leaves/grass clippings back into your lawn

  • Compost yard waste

  • Reduce fertilization

  • Read chemical product labels before using

  • Landscape with native plants

Water Security Legislation

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has requested over $450 million in federal funding for water system security improvements.  Money would be primarily be allocated for small-to-medium water system vulnerability assessment development and emergency response planning.  Other assistance includes water/wastewater security training and information management upgrades.

Brownfields Update

Recent financial and federal Brownfields programs are improving U.S. land recycling opportunities.  State and local governments are now better able to organize and implement cost-effective redevelopment solutions.

In addition to last year's federal Brownfields funding,  Pennsylvania Governor Rendell recently approved a $300 million loan fund for brownfield site revitalization projects.

USEPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman also unveiled a new Land Revitalization Agenda advocating community involvement, employment growth and smarter development.  The program is aimed at uniting site cleanup with productive reuse planning.

Brownfields Redevelopment

Brownfields was a hot topic at last month's Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) Convention in Hershey, PA. The event attracted nearly 5,000 attendees, including PADEP Acting Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty.  She discussed brownfields revitalization and economic opportunities.

Gannett Fleming Senior Environmental Scientist Jill Gaito also made a presentation on brownfields revitalization.

Utility Systems Management

In order to keep afloat in an era of information overload, many utilities are turning to technology to improve their public works operations.

Tune in next issue to read about the benefits of water, wastewater and storm water information management systems.
