Adamski U.N. Assignment

Gannett Fleming's own Bob Adamski, PE, represented the Water Environment Federation at the United Nations (UN) Commission on Sustainable Development, 12th Session (CSD-12), last Spring.  While focused on improving worldwide sustainability in the 21st century, CSD-12 deals with wide-ranging "water, sanitary and human settlement" issues.

For more information on this sustainable organization, visit the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs web site.

Mississinewa Dam, IN
Foundation Remediation

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) began a $40 million slurry wall project on the Mississinewa Dam (located 100 miles northeast of Indianapolis, IN) two years ago.  Gannett Fleming and Advanced Construction Techniques (ACT) implemented a pre-grouting program utilizing IntelliGrout™to stabilize subsurface conditions and facilitate slurry wall installation. . .

Western Drought: No Relief In Sight

Several national news agencies report that the drought gripping the West over the last several years may not only be the worst since the "Dust Bowl" years of the '30s - but since the mid-16th century - particularly in the Colorado River Basin.  Peruse the Colorado River Water Conservation District web site to learn what drought action steps are necessary for the affected communities.  Also read the USGS Colorado River Fact Sheet for more information.

CMOM Program Components

CMOM Elements

control infiltration/ inflow source connections

ensure proper installation, testing and inspection of new/rehabilitated sewers

address satellite collection system flows

implement national pretreatment program inhibitions

sustain adequate maintenance facilities and equipment

map collection system

. . . to be continued

As reported, last Spring, sanitary sewer collection system owners are responsible for various capacity maintenance and operations management (CMOM) requirements when combating sanitary sewer overflows (SSO).

The CMOM program includes several components which facilitate responsiveness to requirements and upcoming regulations.

Check back soon for more information.

Pennsylvania Economic Initiative

A $300 million revolving fund entitled "Business In Our Sites" is focused on assisting municipalities with spurring economic development by making sites "ready to build."  Although stressing brownfields remediation for smaller to medium communities, grant funds can be used for various environmental assessment or water, wastewater, storm water or transportation improvement projects.

Surf the "NewPA" web site for more information.

Act 57: Tapping Fees Presentations

As reported last issue, Pennsylvania municipalities shouldn't hesitate to assess new Act 57 tapping fee legislation and its potential effect on established rates.  To this end, Gannett Fleming Valuation and Rates Vice President, Paul Herbert, and Project Manager, Tom Brown, PE, co-delivered a presentation entitled "Tapping Fees: Act 57 Revisions - Basic Examples" focusing on water and wastewater systems.  Their discussion was part of the PMAA-sponsored workshop last Spring.

Project Manager, Mark Malarich, PE, also recently delivered a presentation on Act 57 "Tapping Fees Guidelines" to the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors.

Contact Mark, Paul or Tom to learn more about how Act 57 will affect your system.

Chester, PA, Drought Of Record

The western United States is not the only area to be affected by droughts over the last several years; one Pennsylvania water supply system experienced their drought of record in 2002. Following the drought, the local authority commissioned a safe yield study of their system which included complex computer model programming.  Gannett Fleming Hydraulics Expert Amanda Hess, PE, presented a paper on this project at last Spring's PA-AWWA section conference.
