ABSTRACT

When faced with a permit to remove nitrogen and phosphorus, a municipal authority will need to consider the various technologies for upgrading its wastewater treatment plant.  These technologies will vary depending on the configuration of the existing plant and the level of removal required.

Options

This presentation will address the range of technologies that can be effectively applied.  Several municipalities in Pennsylvania have already implemented capital programs to achieve nutrient removal.  Examples of Pennsylvania communities and the process approaches they took will be used to explain a variety of technology applications.

Understanding

A major concern of many communities is the cost of achieving compliance with the Chesapeake Bay nutrient strategy.  Depending on the existing wastewater treatment plant processes, the means of achieving will vary, as will be presented in the range of examples.
