Feature Project:

Contract/Location:

Investigation and Remedial Action/ Merrill, WI

Overview:

Our firm is conducting a state-required remedial investigation of a former manufactured gas plant which was located along the Wisconsin River.

Analyses:

Work has included a detailed site investigation to define the degree and the extent of coal tar-contaminated soil, groundwater and river sediment.

Action:

Soil

Source area contaminated soil was excavated and hauled to a local landfill for disposal.

Groundwater

Groundwater will be remediated by injecting a chemical oxidant to promote bioremediation of the residual contaminated groundwater.

River Sediment

Extent of contaminated sediment has been investigated and defined. Remedial alternatives being evaluated include mechanical and hydraulic dredging, capping and monitored natural recovery.  We are also negotiating with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to set site-specific sediment clean-up goals.

Features:

  • Geoprobe® boring samples.
  • Multi-level well and below-river mini-piezometer nest installations.
  • Geophysical survey utilizing ground penetrating radar.
  • A Global Positioning System and mini-sonic drill set on a barge to locate and collect river sediment samples.
  • USACE and WDNR permit coordination.

Technology Corner:

Site Data Manager:
An "Under One Roof" Application

Overview:

Gannett Fleming developed this software to facilitate the management and analysis of environmental site data.  The application provides a generic interface to import data so that analytical results from multiple sources can be brought together "under one roof."

Caveats:

The software provides a flexible querying tool which allows users to "slice and dice" data in a variety of ways.  It also interfaces with Arc Map and other GIS tools to facilitate spacial displays and analysis.

"Site Data Manager" is available without a licensing fee for Gannett Fleming use.

Contacts:

J.D. Kronicz, Developer and Senior Scientist, can arrange for a software demonstration.

Site Remediation Project Manager, Roger Moose, is utilizing this application on a general technical assistance contract administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Anything But Tunnel Vision:
Recreation and Economy

The rehabilitated Big Savage Mountain Tunnel is a critical link in one of the nation's longest and most scenic, non-motorized trails: "The Great Allegheny Passage."  This trail is not only a spectacular recreational resource, but a tremendous economic asset to its surrounding towns.

^ The Passage connects the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath with Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., to form a 335-mile-long cycling and hiking trail.

Local trail economies which previously relied on the railroad, coal mining and steel making industries are being revitalized.  Thanks to the Passage, communities are experiencing growth through tourist-focused industries such as food and lodging.

Contact Paul Lewis, PE, for more information and read The Great Allegheny Passage article in the December 2007 issue of "Borough News" (the magazine for Pennsylvania Borough Government).

Software Management System

The award-winning Big Savage Mountain Tunnel Rehabilitation along with its associated benefits is just one example of Gannett Fleming's big-picture perspective on infrastructure management.

Our firm also developed the "first-ever" National Tunnel Management System (TMS) to be used by state departments of transportation, authorities and transit agencies for inspection, preventive maintenance and repair of their tunnels.

The TMS is intended to help owners and operators identify potential problem areas within their tunnels, such as structural damage caused by groundwater. >

It further facilitates maintenance and repair activities to ensure that tunnels remain in good working condition.  Visit our corporate web site to learn more about TMS features and capabilities.

Forum For New Ideas:
A Multidisciplinary Approach

Gannett Fleming has additionally created the Collaborative Research & Innovation Center (CRIC), a companywide initiative encouraging and facilitating innovation when delivering new products and services to diverse markets.

r Our firm "wrote the book" on grouting and grout monitoring technology.

Recent engineering and environmental project examples include IntelliGrout and Web EMS.

Read our corporate news release for more on the CRIC initiative.

Soil Nailing Joint-Venture

r Soil nailing is a viable and under-utilized technique to consider for many slope failure scenarios.

Our firm has teamed with Stable Construction Company, LLC, to provide Design-Build solutions on slope stabilization and shoreline erosion projects. This partnership facilitates site assessments, design and construction Quality Control when installing permanent soil nails.

"The most common practice for soil nailing in the U.S. consists of drilled soil nails, in which a steel bar is placed in a pre-drilled hole and then grouted. Soil nailing consists of the passive reinforcement (no post-tensioning) of existing ground by installing closely spaced steel bars (nails), which are subsequently encased in grout.  Soil nailing is typically used to stabilize existing slopes or excavations where top-to-bottom construction is advantageous compared to other retaining wall systems."

Geophysical Techniques

r Geophysical methods optimize data collection in a non-destructive and non-intrusive manner.

^ Electromagnetic conductivity study

Geophysical surveys provide a means of rapid, accurate and cost-effective data acquisition.  This is also an excellent method for investigating subsurface conditions over large areas and between drill holes.

A geophysical survey program enables an earth scientist to gather information about specific subsurface targets while expending minimal effort.

Our newly formed division, Quantum Geophysics (see links), enables us to employ the following geo-technologies:

  • Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Magnetometry
  • Gravity
  • Seismic Refraction
  • Seismic Reflection
  • Electromagnetic
  • Electrical Resistivity
  • Spontaneous Potential
  • MASW
  • Marine Surveys
  • Downhole Logging

Contact Quantum Geophysics Vice President, Michael Knight, PG, for more information.

Occupational Safety and Health:
A Healthy Bottom Line

r Gannett Fleming has been a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (see links) for over a quarter century.

Promoting a safe and healthy workplace is both a responsibility and an opportunity for the A/E/C industry.  Furthermore, it results in significant savings in workers compensation benefits.

In order to comply with today's stringent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)-standards, a comprehensive program should include the following elements:

  • Hazardous Materials Surveys
  • Indoor Air Quality Studies
  • Employee Exposure Assessments
  • Construction Safety
  • Personal Protective Equipment Recommendations
  • Ergonomic Assessments
  • Job Safety Analysis

In addition to visiting our corporate web site, contact Certified Industrial Hygienist, Paula Loht [news] for more information.

Construction Project Success

As previously reported, Construction Manager, Dave Weiss, PE, has examined construction elements critical to the success of any project.  Dave indicates that a contractor's capability is the element easiest to determine.

"An experienced, well-prepared construction contractor will be proactive by nature. This is evidenced by some very simple things: the project site is clean; safety devices (ladders, fencing, etc.) are in place; equipment is well-maintained; materials are stored in an orderly manner; and the on-site office is organized."
- Elements Of Successful Construction Projects
From The Viewpoint Of A Consultant

r

Dave provided on-site observation of construction process improvements to the Forest Park Water Treatment Plant Expansion. V

Dave notes that while these items do not refer to the specific abilities of the individual(s) performing the work; each acknowledges the contractor's willingness to take care of the details that allow the "whole" operation to run smoothly.

Slope Stabilization/
Foundation Design

r The new enclosure includes construction of a roof structure anchored to the rock slope and an observation deck with foundations bearing on colluvial soils.

Engineering Geologist, Matt Morris, PG, recently presented a paper entitled, "Rock Slope Stabilization and Foundation Design for the Meadowcroft, PA, Rock Shelter Enclosure," at the Los Angeles, CA, Annual Meeting of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists.
