These projects provide additional treatment capacity and a raw water supply that will allow Spotsylvania County and Fredericksburg to support future growth.  Overall, 90,000 people were served by this project with 70,000 in Spotsylvania County and 20,000 in the City of Fredericksburg.

Innovations

Innovative features of the Hunting Run Water Supply Project are:

»  The Actiflo® system used in the Motts Run Water Treatment Plant, the first of its kind in Virginia, provides effective clarification in a fraction of the space and at half of the cost of conventional clarification.  This plant was redesigned to fit in with its surrounds and will permit additional expansion of up to 42 million gallons of water per day (mgd).

»  Improvements to the existing spillway and embankment of the Motts Run Dam will  prevent flooding, and new embankment blanket and toe drain systems control seepage through the dam.

»  The Hunting Run Dam was constructed using more than 142,000 cubic yards of roller compacted concrete and 500,000 cubic yards of earthfill with zoned earthfill embankments at each end.

»  For the Hunting Run Dam project, IntelliGrout™, a revolutionary computer system, was initialized for real-time electronic monitoring and recording and production of grouting.

»  Hunting Run Reservoir covers 420 acres, contains 3.1 billion gallons of water and provides an additional eight mgd of water supply to Spotsylvania County.
