ABSTRACT

This presentation will cover the basics of filtration and will provide small water system operators and other drinking water professionals with an understanding and familiarity of various filtration techniques.  Those not already familiar with common filtration processes will especially benefit.

Scope

The broad subject-area session will include bag/cartridge, slow sand, diatomaceous earth/precoat, conventional, direct, and membrane filtration.  An overview of each process will include filter components, photographs and illustrations, filter operation, appropriate source waters, and advantages and disadvantages of each process.

Membranes

As reported, many water authorities are selecting membrane treatment, in particular, as the most cost-effective, sustainable filtration process to comply with drinking water regulations (read our Membrane Filtration abstract for more information).
